Then find/locate at least 2 scholarly references to use in support of your discussion. One of these
references should be from a source other than your textbook. (Remember, if using a journal article, the
article should be < 5 years old.) Cite your references within your answer and list the full reference (in APA
format) in the reference text box.

I believe critical thinking in nursing to be creative and rational thinking. Critical thinking is used to
analyze, explore, and interpret phenomena, observations, and previous knowledge. The goal of
critical thinking is to bring about responsible solutions and ideas, free from bias and prejudice, to
provide the best possible outcomes for patients.
In other words, critical thinking involves analyzing and evaluating information through reasoning to
make complex decisions in the delivery of quality patient care. Masters (2017) says that “Critical
thinking is the competent use of thinking skills and abilities to make sound clinical judgments and
safe decisions” (p. 217). Papathanasio, Kleisiaris, Fradelos, Kakou, and Kourkouta (2014) define
critical thinking “as the mental process of actively and skillfully perception, analysis, synthesis and
evaluation of collected information through observation, experience and communication that leads
to a decision for action” (p. 283). Critical thinking actively processes information in order to apply
and validate existing knowledge and/or to create new knowledge. Critical thinking is part of our
professional accountability and is instrumental in quality, safe, nursing care (Masters, 2017). It is
the nurses’ responsibility to make optimal clinical decisions thus requiring that the nurse
demonstrates the ability to think critically. It is the nurses’ responsibility to improve their thinking
skills in order to provide quality patient care and ensure the best possible patient outcome.

Critical thinking is used daily in nursing practice. One example is when a nurse technician reports a
BP of 90/60 for a post operative patient who has been out of surgery for 12 hours. The nurse
enters the room to evaluate the patient. The nurse begins to collect information. The patient is pale
and groggy. His foley catheter shows no urinary output. The nurse thinks through the possible
things that could be causing the low blood pressure. She attempts to awaken the patient. The
patient responds to her questions and slowly begins to awaken. She retakes the BP and confirms
that the nurse technician had an accurate reading. She checks the surgical dressing and notes a
large pool of blood. She immediately notifies the medical provider. The nurse’s clinical knowledge
and analysis of the collected data lead to an action that helps her patient

Critical thinking is like working a jigsaw puzzle. When working a puzzle, you use your senses and skills
to examine each piece. You examine each piece, looking to see how the pieces fit together, avoiding
placing the piece in a wrong spot. Piece by piece you fit matching pairs to solve the puzzle. In critical
thinking you use many skills to examine situations. Critical thinking in nursing requires having the
skills of knowledge, assessment, analysis, and judgment to make sound nursing decisions and to put
the pieces/actions in place to solve the healthcare puzzle and ensure the best possible patient
outcome.SEEI Model Application Assignment
