You will research and assemble a report on the US. The report should target business people from outside
the country and focus on:
• Making readers familiar with the basic facts about the country
• Describing the business environment in the country: Location, Infrastructure, Potential
suppliers, Workforce availability and skill levels, Taxes, Tariffs, Regulatory environment,
Political stability, Potential for armed conflict in the country, Crime, etc.
• Answer the question every company has when considering international expansion: Why
will we be more successful expanding into the country rather than other countries also seeking the
investment and/or increased trade our company can provide?
Be sure you base your report on facts. Reports must provide both quantitative and qualitative data from
reliable sources. Your paper must back up claims, ideas, etc. with at least five references, including at least
one reference from each of:
• Business trade publication(s)
Examples: Business Communications Review, Managing Intellectual Property, Food & Drink Technology,
Southeast Farm Press, Airline Business, Air Cargo World, Rubber & Plastics News, Automotive News, etc.
Seek out trade publications based in your country or region – not just US based publications.
• General business publication(s)
Examples: Business Week, Fortune, Harvard Business Review, Journal of Commerce, Wall Street Journal,
business sections of newspapers, etc. Be sure to include articles on the success of companies who
invested in your country or started trading with firms within your country.
• Government publications
Seek out sources from the World Bank, CIA Factbook, Economic Development entities in your country,
regional economic associations (EU, ASEAN, etc.) These organizations publish reports that include a lot of
useful information and quantitative data that can help you make your case.
• Trade or industry association publications
Examples: Restaurant & catering Industry Assoc of Australia, Retail Council of Canada, etc.
• Chambers of Commerce in your country’s major city(s)
These could be local Chambers, or if available a Chamber of Commerce designed for business people in
your country with firms based in another region. Examples: American Chamber of Commerce in Hong
Kong, American Chamber of Commerce to the EU, etc.
All references must be listed in the (APA style) reference list at the back of your paper, and there must be
at least one (APA style) citation of an idea and/or a direct quote for each reference. You can search for
articles using the databases available through the UW-Superior library. In addition, look for publications,
association web sites and the sites of government agencies in your target country.
While APA style is required for citations and a reference list, the rest of the paper should be formatted as a
report a consultant would provide a client or a manager would submit to his/her boss(es) – keep it business
like and useful to busy managers seeking information to make a location decision. Your report must be
submitted as MS Word document in Canvas.
