Background
What are ethics? Ethic are the moral principles that govern a person’s behavior. Because we are working with vulnerable minors, being an ethical educator is
extremely important. According to the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification (NASDTEC), there is a growing with
teacher education programs to understand how professional decision-making can impact the safety and well-being of children, as well as the culture and
mission of the school.
Purpose
Why do we need a code of ethics? To begin, it is a requirement of membership in the education profession that an educator acts at all times in ethical ways.
In so doing, the ethical educator considers the needs of students, the school community, and the profession. Adhering to a code of ethics protects the rights
of the students. It is important that teachers understand that when they get a teaching position they are agreeing to follow the code of ethics.
Read through the NASDTEC Code of Ethics (There are 5 different principles).
You will then apply the information from the 5 principles of the Code of Ethics to different situations by watching 1-2 minute videos clips and answering the
same three questions for each video clip (what is the issue, what ethical principle is violated in the situation, and what you would do in the situation).
