Case Study 1 – Older Child
In September, Basir (13years) moved to the area with his family, and started his new school. He was occasionally bullied at his old school. He is a fairly quiet child. At the start of the Autumn term, he seemed to be settling in quite well and had made a couple of friends. He was, however, finding the work difficult in a number of his subjects, especially English (he says that the teacher picks on him). Unfortunately, Basir’s grandmother, who lived in Turkey, died during the Christmas break, and his father has flown out to be with his family there. Basir has stayed behind with his Mum and his baby brother (who is just 6 months old.) Teachers are a little worried by Basir as he has been late for school a few times in the last couple of weeks, and he is looking tired, He has also started hanging around with another student, known to be a bully. Basir has been caught making racist remarks online to another student; when he is challenged about it, he cries and asks the teacher not to tell his parents. He also tells the teacher that he thinks he’s ‘rubbish at school stuff’. Basir likes art and computer games and says he would like to be a games designer when he’s older, but he doubts that he is good enough. Apart from this, the teacher has found it quite difficult to get Basir to talk about himself or his family.
