Assignment : Case Analysis
Word Count: 1,500 – 2,000 words
Analyse the on-set crew of a feature film, television series or other major screen production and
articulate the crew roles, responsibilities, hierarchy and relationships.
The Case Analysis can be written in either an essay or report format. It should typically look
to have a three-part structure:
– Part 1: An overview of the structure of the on-set production crew of your chosen film, including
if there are multiple units. Take each department in turn, starting with the HoD.
– Part 2: A brief section detailing how the typical key relationships on set SHOULD work between
the HoDs, especially the director-1st AD-DP-Producer relationship, and their responsibilities to
each other. Who has the power?
– Part 3: A section detailing how the relationships and hierarchies ACTUALLY WORKED on your
case study. There is almost no film that is perfectly ‘typical’. What was the anomalies in your film,
and how did they work? Did it make the film dysfunctional, or just another way of working?

As you can see, films that clearly have an anomalous element work particularly well for this case
study. We are looking to determine that you understand the basic structure of the production
crew, and that the relationships and hierarchies are almost never precisely what they seem to be
on paper.
Recent films that would make good case studies would be ROGUE ONE (an especially interesting
director-producer relationship), or 1917 – a very atypical director-DP-1st AD relationship.
