Final Project: Create a Lesson Plan or Thematic Unit
Create a quality lesson plan for ELLs in your classroom. A quality lesson plan must
contain each of the 11 components outlined below. Be sure to integrate language and
content objectives, higher-order thinking skills, and use unconventional materials and/or
adapt existing texts.

Language objectives
Questions that help guide the identification of language objectives:
1. How will students use language to understand and remember the facts
presented in this lesson?
2. What language skills are needed in order to express an understanding of the
concepts underlying the facts?
3. How is language used to practice the skills and processes that are required in
this content area?
4. What additional language practice can be added to this lesson to strengthen
academic language?
Content objectives
Questions that help guide the identification of content objectives:
1. What facts should students acquire as a result of this lesson?
2. What concepts should they be able to extract from the facts?
3. What skills and processes pertaining to this discipline will be developed by
this lesson?
4. What cultural information or cultural perspectives are embedded in the lesson
content?
Instructional Techniques:
What instructional techniques are you including in your lesson plan in order to address
the language and content objectives? What kinds of pre-learning activities will you
include in your lesson (for example: advance organizers, semantic webs, previewing,
etc.) to help your ELL students meet the above objectives?
Complete your final project lesson plan by Week 8. Please keep a hard copy of your
assignment as back-up.

DEFINITION OF TERMS FOR LESSON PLAN GUIDELINES:
Content Area: Subject to be taught.
Proficiency Level: English language proficiency level.
Grade: Grade level of ELL Students
Topic/Theme: Specific to content area.
Components of a Lesson Plan:
1. Florida Standard
2. Language Objective – Explain how you will support
students’ academic language development.
Content Objective – Define what students should
know and be able to do.
3. Key vocabulary: Identify the specific vocabulary of
the lesson. Do not include more than ten words at one
time. Introduce the vocabulary through the use of
pictures, realia, video clips, demonstrations, charts,
games, etc.
4. Materials/Resources (adapted texts and/or
unconventional materials): Provide pictures, real
objects, video clips, reading passage adapted).
5. ESOL Instructional Strategies: Include the
complete description of the ESOL Strategies being
implemented, not just the code. Include strategies to
promote higher order thinking skills.
6. Background Knowledge/Connections: Provide
opportunities for students to share their knowledge of
the concept(s) being presented and make connections.

7. Lesson Delivery/ Procedures: Presentation
style, Student Practice, Review and Assessment(s).
List the specific steps you will use to present the
material, including specific ESOL strategies,
methodology, preview and follow up activities that
provide opportunities for students to apply new
concepts and skills.
8. Differentiated Instruction: Outline specific
strategies implemented to scaffold instruction for
beginning, intermediate, and advanced ELLs.
9. Parent support activities: Provide an activity
that parents can do with their children to reinforce
the concepts learned in the lesson. This may
include worksheets, flip books, field trips,
discussions, experiments, videos etc.
10. Review/Evaluation: Develop alternative
classroom assessment instruments such as oral
interviews, rubrics, checklists, student self-ratings,
writing samples, portfolios, cooperative
evaluation activities, etc. Remember to assess
knowledge of content and not language
proficiency.
11. Reflection: Think about the implementation of
your lesson. Describe your successes and
challenges. If you did not have an opportunity to
implement the lesson, reflect on the process of
lesson plan design.
