You may have heard the saying “all politics is local”. While we spend a lot of time understanding our government at the national level, in many ways, you have
lots more power at the local level to influence outcomes. Therefore, you will research a city or neighborhood in our area (preferably your own although it
doesn’t have to be). And then you will develop a revitalization plan or a recommendation for how to improve your local community. How can you make your
own community better?
**The neighborhood is Compton California***
To develop a good plan, you should first gather some data. You are free to choose how to do that. You could decide to walk the streets (with masks on and
safely), you could conduct a virtual interview of either community leaders or of residents who have lived there for awhile and would have a sense of what is
needed to improve the neighborhood; you might conduct an interview of a local politician; or you might attend the zoom town council meetings. You should
also do background research on your own – try to find as much as you can about your local neighborhood. What is its history? How does the government
work? Is there a mayor? Is there a legislature/town council? Who makes the decisions? How can the community get involved? Does the community get
involved? What are the major problems? How can they be addressed? Etc. *** feel free to use your imagination when you interview anyone, you can lie and
say you did but make it believable !
Develop a revitalization plan that has at least one concrete recommendation for improvement – a project, activity, etc. – that the community could enact to
improve the neighborhood, city, or town.
This project is worth 50 points or 15% of your grade. There are no page requirements and you can write it up in any fashion you would like. You can include
maps, pictures, and anything else you think important. I will grade the assignment based on:
– Do you provide a good background on the neighborhood? Did you gather significant information?
– Do you provide evidence? Interviews? Pictures? Or other empirical evidence you found in a city plan or elsewhere?
– Is a plan developed with concrete recommendations for change?
– Is the project well-written, free of grammatical errors and presented well?
– Are your sources cited using APA format?
****when using sources please dont copy a whole quote i.e make the quote 50 words keep it to 25 or less words per quote you use as a source***
