Step #1: Identify an EMPIRICALarticlepublished in last 5yearsYou needto select an empirical journal article you think would be relevant andbeneficial to
anagency. However, make sure your article focuses on a topic about family socialization(see our textbook chapter on family for ideas). Keep in mind you
want to select an article that you thinkwould be beneficial to practitionersandbe able to suggesthow someone might utilize empirical research to inform their
practice. Your task is to summarize and paraphrase the findings, thus, no direct quotations should be used.Follow the below criteria in selectingan
appropriate journal article. The article must be:•published in a peer-reviewed journal in the last 5 years (magazines, websites, or books will not be accepted).
•You can see if a journal is peer-reviewed using the Ulrich webdatabase. If you type in the journal name and see the “refereed” icon on the left (), then that
journal is peer-reviewed.If you’re off campus, you need to sign onto VPNto use Ulrich and the library databases.•empirical (i.e., the authors collected &
analyzed data-hint, look for a methods & results sectionwith participants). Exception: literature review/meta-analysisarticles that analyze the results of other
studies (even if published in a journal)and dissertationswill not be accepted. •on a topic related to the family(e.g., parenting, siblings, types of families, child
abuse).Papers that only focus on children are not sufficient.
CADV 352Revised 05/27/20Step #2: Identify a Local Agency/Organizationthat serves familiesUse your resources (e.g., internet, work connections) to identify
an agency in Los Angeles that benefits youth and their family. You may use a national organization as long as they have a local chapter in Los Angeles. For
examples of agencies, check out the last page of this document. Your task is to learn about this agency in-depth by becoming familiar with key features such
as the mission statement, goals, who works there, who they primarily serve, and how they serve families. You may notuse a preschool as an agency.Based on
the family topics from the textbook, think about how the terms and essential concepts we’ve learned in class connectin this agency setting. The goal here is
to identify how a real-worldsituation brings your research article to life(theory-to-practice connection). However, you want to make a connection that is indepth and interesting, not superficial and obvious (anyone could have made that connection). For example, a superficial connection might be, “This empirical
article is about parent-child attachment and this organization would benefit from learning about how important it is that children have healthy
attachments”.Obviously parent-child attachment is important—what new or interesting information about attachment from the article mightbenefit this
organization? You are not being asked to find a research article about an agency. For example, if you choseWomen, Infants, and Children program (WIC)as
your agency, you should not be looking for articles that examined or evaluated the WIC program. If research was conducted about WIC, clearly WIC was
informed out the outcome and will work through how to use the information. WIC would benefit more from learning about research they are not aware
of.When you have selected your article and agency, complete the form on Canvasso I can give you feedback about whether your article is appropriate. I will
only provide feedback if you are able to complete this by the due date on the schedule.Step #3: Write your paperGeneral Guidelines:•To maintain objectivity
and fairness, I will be grading your papers anonymously. Please be sure you don’t provide any identifying information in your paper. •3 pages, double spaced;
title page and references not included in page limit; no abstract needed•Acceptable formats: .doc, .docx, .pdf. If you use google docs, save it as a .pdf and
makesure the final paper you submit is formatted the way you want.•Include page numbersin the top right-hand corner•The entire document, including the
header, should be Times New Roman,12-point font•Use 1” margins (note: the default for word is 1.25”. You must manually change this)•Must follow APA
style format in terms of page setup (e.g., title page, appropriate bolding), references, and citations. oOn the title, page, instead of your name, type “Matty
Matador”. oIf you’re not sure how to format your paper in APA style, check out the resources on Canvas•If your assignment exceeds the page/word limit, I will
stop reading the paper. Your grade on an assignment can suffer if you fail to follow these conventions. Part 1: Empirical Article Summary(not to exceed 2
pages). You may NOT use direct quotes from the article.1.Literature Reviewand research question/hypothesis-Describekey researchthat inspired this
study, the purpose of the study, and the research question or hypothesis. If there aremultiple research questions or hypotheses, focus onone
question/hypothesis. It is better to clearly explain one hypothesis than to simply list several hypotheses;
CADV 352Revised 05/27/202.Methodology-a very brief descriiption of the setting, participants, and data collection procedure. If you focus on one
hypothesis, only describe the measure that is relevant to that particular question;3.Results-Answer the research question/hypothesis; describe only the
relevant findings; (no statistics required); 4.Discussion-What does this all mean? What’s the overall quick main point your audience should know after reading
your paper? This is the most important subsection.Part 2: Theory-to-Practice Connections Information about this particular agency and the relevance of your
article. These sectionsinclude:1.Agency name, brief summary of mission statement/ goals, populations they serve, and/or who works at this agency.Avoid
copying and pasting from a website.2.Details regarding how they assist youth and families (give an example).3.Theory-to-practice Connection: Explain how
your empirical article maybe beneficial to an agency. Be very specific. What decisions or program changesmight an agency implement after discovering
research findings like this one?Are these connections practical, realistic, and in line with the goals and mission of the agency? This is the most important
subsection.Step #4: Submit thefirst draft of your paper through Canvas.Seethe syllabus for the due date.Incomplete papers (e.g., papers that do not have all
required sections) will not receive credit. Because this assignment is time sensitive(your peers get less than oneweek to review your paper), no late
submissions will be accepted. The consequences for not submitting a complete first draft of. your paper by the deadline are the following:•You will not
receive points for this section(4points).•You will not be able to completethe peer reviews (8points). Step #5: Complete peer reviews. You haveone week to
complete this section—see the syllabus for the due date.Once you submit your paper, you will be randomly assigned toreview 2 papers. Byproviding feedback
on how well your peer’s paper meets the grading criteria, you will see the paper from my perspective. If the paper does not make sense you, I likely have the
same opinion. You can use this insightto evaluate your own paper. There are 3parts to the peer review:Part1:Read through paper once for clarity and
understanding. Provide “macro” notes based on the rubric on the last page of this document(E.g., In order to strengthen your logic/organization/writing/APA
style you need to XXXX)Part2:Re-read and write specific suggestions on the paper (grammar, spelling). Common errors include incorrectly
usingtheir/they’re/there, it’s/its, to/two/too.Part3:Assign overall grade out of 40In general, use a respectful toneand provide useful feedback. Comments such
as “this is good” are not helpful. If you believe the paper doesn’t need improvement, then talk about the strengths of the paper so that your comments are
informative and constructive. However, if you give feedback that the paper is “good” but in fact needs quite a bit of improvement, yourgrade will suffer. I will
not grade the peer reviewuntil final papersare submitted so that I cancompare your feedback to the final paper.Step #6: Revise your paper based on
suggestions from your peer. You have one week to revise your paper based on your peers’feedback before the final submission. The feedback you receive may
or may not be helpful. In the end, it’s up to you to decide if and how to revise your paper to best meet the grading criteria.Step #7: Submit your paper final
paper. See the syllabus/schedulefor the due date.CADV 352Revised 05/27/202.Methodology-a very brief descriiption of the setting, participants, and data
collection procedure. If you focus on one hypothesis, only describe the measure that is relevant to that particular question;3.Results-Answer the research
