You should choose one of the following questions to answer in an essay of 2-3 pages. The paper should be an argument, complete with a thesis, defining
terms, and otherwise basically following the conventions of philosophical writing found in your textbook and in the Harvard Guide to Writing Philosophy.
Download Harvard Guide to Writing Philosophy.You will want to draw upon Mackie and Adams when writing your paper, but can certainly go beyond those
two when making your argument. Outside research is perfectly fine!
Note that these are discussion questions taken from the Broadview Introduction to Philosophy, page 81.
1)What do you think goodness is? Do you think evil is merely the absence of goodness (or vice versa) or can something be neither good nor evil (nor both)?
2)Is the universe better with some evil in it than it would be without any? (For example, do you think a life of successful struggle against adversity is more
valuable than one of uninterrupted pleasure? If so, why?)What do you make of Mackie’s arguments against this claim?
Citations
YOU MUST CITE ANY PARAPHRASED OR QUOTED MATERIAL IN YOUR ESSAY. This includes any material taken from the Mackie or Adams, as well as any
additional material you use in writing your essay.
While philosophy typically uses the Chicago Manual of Style format for references, you may use EITHER APA or MLA format.
You need to have a works cited page as well as parenthetical citations when necessary.
Feel free to use any additional scholarly material to help you write this paper. This is a well researched topic and many articles exist that could help you.
Grading
In order to earn an A grade (typically a 95, adjusted slightly up or down), the paper MUST have ALL of the following:
A clear thesis
A brief introduction that focuses on outlining the paper’s argument
A brief but clear explanation of key concepts, particularly civil disobedience and justice.
A well formed, clear argument
A brief conclusion that summarizes the paper’s argument
Proper citations
A complete works cited page. (Note: the works cited page does not count as one of the 2-3 pages for the paper
Page numbers
