Purpose/Description: Show understanding of concepts covered in class or the textbook by identifying song lyrics that relate to what we have learned and discuss how these concepts relate to the songs you have chosen. You cannot use the same theory or concept for more than one song. You may use the same artist more than once, but you cannot use the same song more than once. You will turn in 12 songs/concepts.
NOTE: You may not use more than one song written by Nickelback or Justin Bieber. Doing so will result in a significant point deduction and loss of personal respect for you as a student and human being.
For each song you must include:
• Song Title, Artist
• The specific portion of the lyrics you are discussing (I don’t need all the lyrics)
• A 2-3 sentence (~.25 page) reflection that focuses on why the song’s lyrics are an example of the concept/theory you chose.
Format: Please fill in the template on the next page for each of your songs/concepts. Be sure that you follow these guidelines:
• When writing about how the song and lyrics relate to the course concept or theory, please bold the course concept or theory you are using and please quote specific portions of the lyrics that specifically relate to that concept.
• Either Single or Double Spaced – Please choose one and be consistent.
• Times New Roman font
• 12 Point font size
• 1-inch margins on all sides
• No title page is required for this assignment
• Include Student’s Names on First Line of First Page – Use Template Starting on the Next Page
Example
SONG ONE
Song Title: Chasing Cars
Artist: Snow Patrol
Specific Lyrics Being Discussed:
“If I lay here,
If I just lay here,
Would you lie with me,
and just forget the world”
Reflection:
This song relates to Affection Exchange Theory and other concepts about affection and social support we have covered this semester. Specifically, Affection Exchange Theory notes that we can express affection to someone either verbally, nonverbally without words, or through socially supportive actions. The lyric, “If I just lay here, would you lie with me and just forget the world,” is an example of nonverbal affection and how it can be enough to provide relief from the stress and anxiety we face. Affectionate displays do not always have to be expressed verbally, and sometimes it is just enough to be next to someone who cares.
