Part III-Citizen Science Final Report (120 points)

For this final report, you will be summarizing your own data and comparing it to other data listed in the study links on zooniverse.org (you may have to go to additional websites for this information). You will write a report as if you are communicating your results from the project to the scientists (yes, you will pick one or more of the scientists listed in your study to address it to). Read through the whole document before getting started. There are examples and graphic organizers embedded to guide your ideas.
A. Your Data Summary (20 points):

B. Sharing results with members of the community (80 points):
• Who are you writing to (you can find this information on the Zooniverse project page when you click on “learn more”)? You want to write to them as if you want to join their project.
• Background summary of the project (You will find this information on Zooniverse directly or you will see links that take you to project pages where you can find more information). Scientists do background research before any project to understand what is known and what we still want to find out. They also look at what previous data has shown to form a hypothesis. Remember, you are writing to become part of the research team so you need to convince them that you understand their project and can contribute data and data analysis to their team.
i. What are scientists trying to learn?
ii. Give an example of a hypothesis that scientists could be trying to answer in your study. For example, Predators are present more often when penguin chicks are born.
iii. How did they design the study (is it a new idea? Are they building on a previous project? Is it designed to inform a larger idea such as climate change or evolution? Is it to learn about something from history?)
iv. Data analysis: What does your data show? How does your data compare with overall data reports from the study? What are some challenges with summarizing your data?
• What is the importance/significance of the study (why does it matter, why do you think they asked for help from the public, what will they do with the data)?
C. Share your personal experience with contributing to science through this project (20 points). Make a separate paragraph for each of the following topics (and any additional items about your project that you would like to discuss)
i. What did you learn?
ii. Successes/challenges
iii. Would you recommend this project for future students? Why or why not?
iv. Do you think citizen science is important? Why or why not?

Claim-Evidence-Reasoning
An important part of a scientific project is the data. Throughout the semester, we have discussed many strategies to make sure our experiments are designed to give accurate, unbiased data. After a study is completed scientists share their results with the community through publications, blogs, conferences, universities, podcasts and many other ways. When scientists make “claims” from their data it is important that they share evidence of that claim and how that evidence supports the claim. To launch your final report, you are going to do this with your own data (you can also use additional data shared online for your project but your own data must be at the center). This information can also be discussed in your final report. What claim can you make from your data and what evidence do you have to support it? What is your reasoning? See the example on blackboard for reference.
