Limit your response to a maximum of two pages and number all answers. Questions must be answered in
complete sentences. DO NOT WRITE THIS AS AN ESSAY, follow this format exactly. All papers must be
typed and double-spaced do not submit handwritten work.
When quoting your facts, use quotation marks. Using someone else’s words without quotation marks is
plagiarism and a plagiarized paper earns a grade of zero.
Include the page, column and paragraph number where the quote was found; for example (page 129,
column 2, paragraph 3). Spelling, grammar, proper annotation and formatting is worth 3 points.
CRITIQUES must be sent EMAIL. Critique is potentially worth 25 points.
Questions:
1. Give the title, number of the article and author(s). (2 point)2. Briefly (2-4 sentences) state the main idea in your own words. (4 points)
Look for the main idea in the title, subtitle, and first few paragraphs. Usually, the title does not have enough
information to accurately describe the main idea. Therefore, think about the subtitle if present, and
introductory paragraphs. Reading the conclusions (last few paragraphs) could also be useful in
understanding the main idea.
3. Use exact quotes for the facts (do not paraphrase). Identify three different facts from three different
pages that supports the author’s main idea. Immediately after stating the fact describe how each, separate
fact supports the main idea; why was this fact important to supporting the main idea? Do not lump the 3
facts or the 3 supporting statements together. (8 points)
Remember to include page, column, and paragraph in which you found the fact.
Be sure to label each, separate fact a, b & c. A fact is a piece of information; it might be data from an
experiment. A fact must have a reference source, so it can be verified. It is not an opinion, hypothesis,
conclusion, estimate or prediction. Be specific!
4. Specifically quote an example of the author’s bias or faulty reasoning in the article. Explain how this
represents bias or faulty reasoning on the part of the author. It should not be an example of bias from
people being interviewed or discussed in the article. (5 points)
Include page, column and paragraph numbers to which you are referring.
“Bias” means the author’s point of view. “Faulty Reasoning” means arriving at a conclusion without a sound
factual basis; it could be a low sample size or poor research. You need to recognize that these are
important parts of the process of evaluating the validity of an article.
5. Give one new (or interesting) term/concept that was discussed in the article or our textbook
Understanding Human Sexuality relating to the topic discussed in the article and write a short definition.
Identify which page, column and paragraph you found the term or concept(3 points). If you cannot find
anything new, write about a term or concept you found interesting.
Remember you will lose points, even if the information is appropriate, if you do not follow the instructions
for completing this assignment.
