*Steps in writing an Academic Paper*
1. Choose a passage
2. 2. Read the text carefully- in as many versions as possible
3. Develop your hypothesis/interpretation (an idea that you will test, or prove in
your paper)
4. Historical research
5. Literary research
6. Word studies
7. Review your hypothesis/interpretation in light of current research
8. Commentary and journal work- get sources (commentaries, Survey Text, etc.)
9. Outline your essay
10. Write a well laid out argument in support of your hypothesis/interpretation
*Tips for Academic Writing *
1. Margins – 1” margins on all sides
2. Font – Times New Roman, 12 pt.
3. Headings – Provide headings for each section assigned in the assignment
4. Line Spacing – Double spaced
5. Indent the first line of a paragraph.
6. Sources- use no less than 3 sources [books], which DOES NOT include the class text. No online
sources. Please utilize the Schools library for this paper.
7. Citations – Utilize footnotes to cite sources.
8. Spelling and Grammar-Proofread all assignments, checking the spelling and grammar before submitting
for a grade. This can be accomplished
quickly and easily using the spelling and grammar checking tools of the
Microsoft Word software. Spelling, punctuation, and grammar errors will
lower your grade.
9. First Person-Academic assignments employ the “third person”
perspective as opposed to “first person.” Consider the following
examples: First person perspective is the “I, we, our” viewpoint, and is
seen in expressions such as, “I began with the assumption that…” or “we
understood the results to mean…” or “our experience shows this will not
work.” Third person perspective is the omniscient point of view and is
seen in expressions such as, “he began with the assumption that…” or“they understood the results to mean…” or “their experience shows this
will not work.”
Assignments for this course should be written in the third person.
Preferred language style  Simple (Easy vocabulary, simple grammar constructions)
