In March, American jet
manufacturer Boeing announced the
initial test flight of the new GE9X engine –
the world’s largest-ever aircraft engine,
built by GE Aviation for Boeing’s 777X
wide-body airliner. This marked the start
of the engine’s flight test campaign, and
while program manager Ted Ingling said it
was “picture perfect”, the flight was
preceded by months of delays due to
technical issues with the engine.
e paper will be on a topic related to a current engine/powerplant in the aviation/aerospace industry,
domestic and/or international. You will find your topic by reviewing current aviation magazines, reading the
newspaper or visiting websites. Having said that, I like thinking outside the box. There are a lot of new
engines and rocket motors out there that can be researched. I especially like commercial space travel and
the new technologies that are currently being produced to afford “civilian” space travel.
As part of this course you will be required to complete a minimum 7 page paper plus a title page and a
reference page (this means 9 pages minimum total). Your paper will conform to APA format and be APA
compliant. This will may be your first exposure to APA. I can’t speak for every professor at EU, but I can tell
you that APA is the academic standard at nearly ever accredited university in the United States and most of
them in the EU for research writings. It is a very necessary tool to acquire as part of your education.
Using APA is actually very easy, but one must acquaint themselves with the basic rules. There is a link to
APA in the class platform at the bottom and you can contact the library for further information, but I’ll give
you a heads up for what I look for. Just for the record, a research paper, isn’t supposed to look “pretty.” It
isn’t a novel. It will be full of cites and may appear choppy to read if you are not accustomed to it. Don’t
forget, MS Word only!
1) The cover sheet must conform to APA format
2) The body is double spaced but not double/double spaced between paragraphs
3) Indent the paragraphs and Word should be able to see not to double/double space the paragraphs.
4) Arial or Times New Roman, 12 point font ONLY.
5) 1 inch margins all sides
6) Cites must be correctly formatted
7) Cites must be used anytime you are paraphrasing someone else’s words
8) Cites must be used anytime you are quoting someone else’s words
9) Quotes must be in quotation marks
10) Long quotes (see the rules for what makes a long quote long) must be blocked, without quotation
marks
11) Graphics must be cited. Put the cite directly under the graphic. I don’t care if the graphic is left, right or
in the center.
12) Graphics should be presented in the text where discussed in the work, not at the end of the page or
end of the paper. Learn how to wrap text around a graphic. It is a great feature of MS Word and a skill you
should possess.
13) Understand that a well written paper has LOTS of cites. Some may have cites every sentence or two. It
is always better to be safe than get tagged with a quote or paraphrase that you should have cited but didn’t.
It isn’t supposed to look pretty like a novel, it is a research paper.
14) Your Title Page and Reference page have specific formats and formats for your references are based
on the source or type. This must be followed to the letter and the reference page is always a separate page
15) Don’t forget to number all pages except the title page. APA will tell you this is discretionary (as to
numbering the title page). I want you to number the pages
16) The title page and reference page does NOT count toward the required page count.
17) I like graphics, so the more the better, if used properly and judicially. But, they are not allowed to be fill
for a well written body of text. So the more graphics, the more pages you need to add. I still want a good
paper.
You are required to embed a minimum of 2 graphics, photos or graphs (graphs, charts, etc.), or a
combination, in your paper. They must be embedded in the body where you are discussing them, not at the
end of the paper and you must word wrap your text around them. I don’t care if you wrap left or right or in
the center. You may choose whatever you think looks the best. MS Word is easy to use for this purpose
and explains how to do it very simply.
