Application of Research to Healthcare IT Problems

Lesson: Summarize and apply research articles to healthcare IT problems
Learning Objectives:
Students will be able to,
1. Read current scholarly research and industry articles and relate them to healthcare IT problems
2. Demonstrate staying current in healthcare IT related topics
Scenario:
You are at a lunch with a Chief Information Officer (CIO) of a hospital group, a doctor, and a hospital CEO. The CIO says to you “You went to WTAMU. What did you learn about Healthcare IT that we can apply to our organization? What is new that we need to be aware of?” You give them a brief summary (elevator-type speech) about various scholarly articles and industry articles you recently read.
Task:
1. Pick at least seven articles to read. See \\Wtclass\CIDM6375\Week4\Scholarly Articles. Topics include data analytics in healthcare, BigData in healthcare, telemedicine, IT trends and opinions, blockchain transactions in healthcare, and interconnectivity through API services.
2. Summarize each of the articles you choose to read. Identify the main points of the articles that would be of interest to a CIO, doctor/healthcare providers, or hospital administrators.
3. Each summary or each article should be between a quarter of a page and half a page each. Use bullet points, short sentences. If needed, use short paragraphs. Use headings and subheadings as appropriate.
4. For each article, answer the question “How can this be applied to our healthcare organization?” You may make assumptions about what type of healthcare organization you work with—does not have to be a hospital.
5. Use the outline and subheadings to make each summary skim readable. I suggest the following outline. Repeat for each article.

b. Main Points
c. How can this be applied to our healthcare organization?
d. Reference
6. Include your name in the document. Call the file Task 4.0 by LAST_NAME.docx Put your last name in the file name.
7. Identify the reference of the article you summarized. APA format is sufficient.
8. If there is a quote or a figure/chart that is extremely valuable, include it. But keep the quotes to less than half of your summary.
9. Summarize case examples if the article provides examples.
10. Put all your summaries in one MS Word document.
11. Do NOT write an essay. Do not write fluff. Your document is NOT an English report or thesis. Do NOT write long, multi-clause sentences that make understanding hard. Your summaries should be concise, clear, easy to read for rapid consumption by very busy people.

Main Points
1. This was a study of using a mobile app with a smoking cessation treatment. Patients also took varenicline while downloading and using the app to support adherence.
2. Researchers studied mobile app use to determine if the app was used and helpful.
3. Sample size was 131 participants
4. “The findings demonstrate the willingness of participants to set a quit date and use the app for support in medication adherence, refill reminders, and information regarding how to take the medication.”

How can this be applied to our healthcare organization?
1. Promote the use of mobile apps that help people stop smoking, particularly among conditions that are negatively affected by smoking like stroke and cancers.
2. Look for other mobile apps that can help patients adhere to treatments

Structure An outline with headings was used as recommended by the instructor. Variations are acceptable. Headings and bullets and short paragraphs make the summary easy and quick to read.
