Case Study Requirements

Each student will write a case study on one of the topics listed below or a topic that interests you and is related to kidney function AND present that case study during week 14 in class.

Include in your written case study:

• Total length of the case study should be 2 pages. Including the tables with the results.
• Brief medical history of patient and (if you choose) family history.
• How the patient presented with the initial symptoms.
• 5 Tests the physician ordered AND why the physician would order them. (What do you think the physician is trying to find out?) These may include tests that are not performed in the laboratory (i.e. CT, MRI, X-ray) or tests that are performed in another department within the lab that is not urinalysis. (Hematology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Cytology)
• Results of the laboratory tests AND what they indicate. If you also added a non-lab test please make sure to indicate what the interpretation was. i.e. enlarged liver or blockage by kidney stone
• Diagnosis of the patient and what evidence lead them to that decision.
• Any other relevant material and summary- brief description of treatment.
• Site all references-3 references, one can be the text book. If they are from the internet, make sure it is reputable. The Mayo Clinic and ARUP are good sites. Center for Disease Control (CDC) is also a good site. Nothing with .com at the end. It should be .edu. at the end of your web address. You may also use AACC website (American Association of Clinical Chemistry), Labtestsonline.org, ASH (American Society of Hematology) and ASCP website (American Society of Clinical Pathology). There are many more these are just the specific laboratory sites that are referred to quite often.
• Wikipedia CAN NOT be used as a web site

Each student will receive 50 points for case study portion and 50 points for oral presentation of the case study. Your oral presentation must be at least 5 minutes long and must have a visual aid i.e. poster, visual demonstration, pictures on the screen etc. What your presentation/paper CANNOT have is any work that is not created solely by you, i.e. any YouTube video that you did not create and are not presenting in the video itself. DO NOT cut and paste from the internet (research and paraphrase all information) and DO NOT use any past work from a former student. Any work that is not your own will result in a zero.

Some ideas that might interest you are:
• UTI – urinary tract infection. Include upper and lower
• Urine Therapy – there is a wide variety of therapies. You can talk about one, or two.
• Acute Glomerulonephritis
• Pyelonephritis
• Renal calculi
• Diabetes – either mellitus or insipidus
• Goodpasture’s Syndrome
• Sepsis

If you have a topic that interests you, bring it to my attention. Topics will be assigned week 12 and presentations will occur week 14.

Be sure to use reputable web sites (Wikipedia is NOT a reputable site and is not acceptable research material) and remember that plagiarism is against Clark State College Policy!
