How will virtual production revolutionise the film production industry during the COVID-19 era? Exploring the extent to which the new emerging practice of virtual production will revolutionise the film industry during and beyond the covid 19 pandemic. Using key case studies such as The Mandalorian (2019) and The Lion King (2019) – exploring the use of new technologies such as LED walls and comparing them with traditional filmmaking practices, while attempting to understand the extent to which these techniques will impact standardised crew roles. Will also attempt to explore the definition of ‘virtual production’ and it’s origins, while placing it within the historical, social and economic context of the digital production landscape. It will conclude that the entire production workflow will be revolutionised as a result of these technologies and thereby force major studies and industry practitioners to rethink their approaches to contemporary film production in a demanding age driven by screen-based based media.
