The question is

“If we cannot imagine ourselves as different from what we are, and try to assume that second self, we cannot impose discipline upon ourselves though we may accept one from others” W.B. Yeats, Per Amica Silentia Lunae (1918).

The poetry of W.B. Yeats is preoccupied with understanding the relationship between opposites. Through close analysis of two (2) of the prescribed poems, and drawing on one (1) or two (2) keywords to assist your analysis, discuss how and to what end Yeats represents the relationship between opposites in each poem.

Your answer should name the particular opposite(s) you are focussing on, and comment specifically on relevant formal features of each poem, e.g. figurative language, structure, rhythm, meter, genre and diction insofar as they are relevant to the terms of the question

Prescribed poems available in ENGL102 Reading List:

“The Lake Isle of Innisfree”

“Easter 1919”

“The Second Coming”

“Leda and the Swan”

“Sailing to Byzantium”

“The Circus Animals’ Desertion”
