Active discussion participation makes your learning experience much richer. Discussion in this course is designed to simulate a classroom discussion. As others join in the discussion, read what has already been posted and then add substantively to the conversation. Post by Wednesday! Check the discussions as often as you can to see what others have posted and to respond. The earlier in the week that you begin posting, the deeper the conversation and learning will be.

The first question in this discussion is opinion and experience-based, so you can begin immediately.

In your opinion and based on all you have learned in your time at Excelsior, discuss the following question:

Describe a lesson you have learned from reaching out to people from a culture or group that differs from yours. What impact did this lesson have on you?

Next, watch a 14- minute video,
Get Vaccinated,
(Links to an external site.)
and discuss the following questions. Apply your course materials and prior learning while discussing the questions, one at a time.

How were the unique needs and perceptions of the Haitian community reflected in the video? To what extent was the message sensitively conveyed or communicated to the community?
The need for HPV prevention cuts across groups and cultures. Choose a cultural group of interest and discuss how you would address the unique characteristics of that group in providing HPV prevention services? Try to choose a group that is different from the groups other students are discussing. As you share cultural perspectives, discuss common themes that emerge, as well as the rich differences in approaches.

Consult the Discussion Posting Guide for information about writing your discussion posts. It is recommended that you write your post in a document first. Check your work and correct any spelling or grammatical errors. When you are ready to make your initial post, click on “Reply.” Then copy/paste the text into the message field, and click “Post Reply.”

To respond to a peer, click “Reply” beneath her or his post and continue as with an initial post.

This discussion will be graded using the SHS Discussion rubric. Please review this rubric prior to beginning the discussion. You can view the rubric on the Course Rubrics page within the Start Here module. All discussions combined are worth 25% of your final course grade.

Participation in this discussion assesses the following module outcomes:

Analyze diversity among members of a community. (CO 3)
Compare and contrast characteristics, perspectives, needs, and preferences of diverse groups in the outreach and delivery of health services. (CO 3)
