IMPORTANT: There are two parts to this project. A research outline and the essay itself. I need the outline completed by June 16 and the essay completed by June 19. I do not need the essay itself on the 16th, just the outline. Again, the essay itself is due June 19. Thank you!

Research Outline – Due June 16 – see attached file
Your evaluation is based mostly on your effort to establish a good topic, thesis, supporting points, and credible research. Peer-reviewed sources means you’re looking for academic or scholarly sources.

Research Project – Due June 19 – see information below…
Assignment Sheet: Research Project (an argument based on sources)

OBJECTIVES: Write a research based argument/proposal essay. The minimum length is 1,300 words. You’ll have two broad options to choose from:

1. Write an argumentative essay. Pick a topic. Pick a position and defend it. Remember that this is still a relatively short essay: narrow your topic as much as possible.

2. Write a proposal essay. Identify a problem and offer a solution.

RESEARCH OUTLINE: Prior to submitting your draft you will complete an outline (DUE: June 16) of your argument and preliminary research. Please review the outline assignment ahead of time to make sure you will have enough time to prepare. This will be due Tuesday, June 16, a few days before the rough draft.

SUGGESTIONS: There are many ways to go about this assignment. First, decide between the two options. Next, find a topic that interests you—something that you want to explore more deeply. I encourage you to be innovative; don’t settle for cliché topics or simply picking without any personal investment. Be passionate. Then, RESEARCH. Go to reliable sources. Find several articles related to the topic. Read and take notes. Highlight important passages. Whichever option you choose and regardless of your topic, remember that this essay is a “test” of how deeply you can think, argue a position, offer solutions to a problem, and how well you can communicate those ideas in writing.

You may want to use a typical argumentative structure: introduction/thesis, three supporting points, and a conclusion. Or you may borrow from another writing model. Feel free to incorporate some of the writing strategies and styles we’ve already covered this semester (narrative, reflection, analysis, etc.).

Here is a document covering some argumentative writing strategies. Something to consider is logical fallacies, which are common blunders people make when arguing. And if you’d like a guided example essay as a reference, you can take a look at this document to see the various requirements for properly citing your sources. Remember to NEVER copy another writer’s words without quoting or giving proper credit. If you improperly use a source, you can fail the whole assignment for plagiarism.

RESEARCH: You need 4 sources for this essay (and a Works Cited Page); ONE of your sources must be PEER-REVIEWED (https://www.angelo.edu/services/library/handouts/peerrev.php), which is a scholarly source. In general, focus on finding articles or essays from credible sources (Time Magazine, Harper’s, The Wall Street Journal, etc.). Use the websites of magazines or newspapers, or old-fashioned hard sources (you know, things you can touch with your hands).

PLANNING: Here are some basic questions for consideration:

What is your thesis (central claim or main argument)?
How will you use the title and introduction to grab the attention of your reader?
How timely is your argument?
How will you appear knowledgeable or credible (ethos) about the topic?
How will you appeal to the values and emotions of your readers (pathos)?
What supporting reasons do you have to support your thesis?
How will you establish a sense of purpose in the essay?
How will you structure the essay?
What types of sources will you use and how will you productively integrate them?
What are possible objections or counterarguments to your position?
What will be the tone of your essay?
What are your solutions? How will they be implemented? Are they feasible?

Final Draft:
Make sure you have a proper MLA heading.
Essay must meet the required number of pages (1,300 words minimum).
Number your pages.
Include a TITLE that makes your topic and focus clear. Example: Should the NFL Reconsider Using Helmets?
Review your thesis statement (first sentence or last sentence in your introduction). Your thesis for this assignment is either your position on a controversy or a solution to a problem. Example: Due to the increased strength and speed of current NFL players, the league should stop using helmets or implement softer helmets akin to players of earlier generations. This would drastically change the way players tackle, leading to fewer serious injuries.
Review that your points are credible, make sense, and engage your readers.
Check to make sure that you’ve properly CITED your sources, both in the body of the essay and Works Cited page.
Choose an appropriate font (equivalent to 12pt Times New Roman).
Double space with standard page margins.
A Works Cited page (4 sources minimum/including 1 peer-review).
