Speech #2: The Demonstration Speech
General Purpose: To inform your audience about the “process” by which something works. It can also be looked at as a speech on how to do something, how something is applied, or how a particular product is made or built. Do NOT give an object speech. The keyword in an object speech is ‘about’, while the keyword in a demo speech is ‘how’.
Specific Purpose Statement Examples:
· The audience will understand how tsunamis develop.
· The audience will know how to write an effective resume.
· The audience will understand how oriental rugs are made.
· The audience will know how to select the right iron in golf.
Assignment Description: Select topics that are useful and interesting. Explain how something works or the steps involved in how to do something. Your goal is not to express your attitude or personal viewpoint on the topic. Do not urge the audience to act on your topic – just inform them. A lengthy process may be shortened by highlighting key steps or focusing on selected aspects of the process.
