Health Related Quality of Life Discussion Board
Guidelines:
For this discussion assignment, we want each of you take a night off and enjoy a movie (Still Alice) . Your
job is to relate the basic concepts of Ferrans’ et al.’s (2005) middle range nursing theory of health-related
quality of life to the movie.
Ferrans and colleagues undertook the revision of a model of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) published
in 1995 by Wilson and Cleary. Ferrans’ work expanded the conceptualization of the domains in the original
model and integrated it with the work of other theorists. They redefined the original model by more clearly
differentiating the individual factors from environmental factors, deleted non-medical factors, and directional
labels.
Specific concepts from Ferrans’ et al. theory that you must address are:
• Characteristics of the individual and environment • How these characteristics affect:
o biological function
o symptoms
o functional status,
o general health perceptions
o Overall quality of life.
It will be important for you to clearly highlight each of the above concepts related to the character(s) of the
movie and use specific examples.
• Use APA format when referencing your sources. Include citation(s) and a reference for the movie Still
Alice, as well as the Ferrans et al. article. •
