Freeman’s article “Managing for Stakeholders

Reading Response Assignment:
Please read in full. You are responsible for all information written below.

I. Reading Response 1 (basics):
1) Write a response to Freeman’s article “Managing for Stakeholders”
-Responses to any other reading will not be accepted (not TEB, Friedman, etc.)

2) Responses must be AT LEAST 300 words, NO MORE than 600 words (going outside of this range will affect your grade).

3) Responses are essays. (No bullets, lists, etc.)

4) Submit your response to iCollege by Wednesday, September 16th at 11:59pm
a) Only responses submitted to iCollege will be accepted
b) late responses will receive at most 60%
c) Reponses will not be accepted after September 23rd at 11:59pm

5) Submit your response as a Word Document.
-Title your response with 1RR + last four digits of student ID. (Ex. 1RR0758)

6) Turnitin will be enabled. Please review to make sure you have not unintentionally used other works and not cited them.

II. Writing a Response:
Reading responses require at least two parts:

1) A summary of some aspect of the reading. (Best to choose an argument, or significant passage from the reading).

2) A critique of that aspect of the reading.

3) If you use any sources other than Freeman, you must cite them in a works cited. (I do not care which citation form you use, so long as it is consistent).
-FAILURE TO CITE CONSTITUTES PLAGIARISM
-However, if you cite Freeman in the text, please include page numbers.

III. Writing the Summary Portion:
1) Do not attempt to summarize the whole reading. Select a significant passage or argument to focus on.

2) When summarizing, focus on the argumentative structure of the section you are looking at. (What is the conclusion? What are the premises that support that conclusion? Etc.)

3) Make sure to:
a) Be as accurate as possible. (Accurately portray the author’s view).
b) Do not include irrelevant information. (What is the point you are focusing on? If something is not relevant to that point, do not include it).
c) Keep your summary and your critique separate. (Do not criticize the author’s view as you are summarizing it. This will harm the accuracy of your summary).

IV. Writing the Critique Portion
1) Evaluate the passage you reviewed in the summary.
2) You can:
a) Evaluate the logical consistency of the passage. (Look for contradictions, irrelevant premises, invalidity, etc.)
b) Come up with a relevant counterexample.
c) Show how one or more premises are false.
d) Point out a fallacy (another form of a logical critique).
e) **You are free to use other readings to support your critique (such as Friedman). If you do, they must be cited in a works cited.
f) And there are many other options…

3) Your critique is an argument:
a. You should aim at making your argument strong. (Make it valid, sound, relevant, etc.)
b. Your critique is not an opinion. You must defend your position.
c. Your critique should challenge the reading, not just elaborate on it or offer another interpretation of the reading.

V. Evaluation
You Response will be evaluated on:
1) Clarity. (Your main point writing is easy to read, not confusing. Furthermore, your writing is concise, and does not include irrelevant details).

2) Accuracy. (Your summary is accurate, does not misrepresent the author’s views).

3) Argumentative Strength. (Your argument against the reading is sound and relevant to the summary. It is also not contradictory).

VI. General Structure you can use:
I. Your main point/thesis (What passage/main idea from the reading are you focusing on, and what is the main point of your criticism?)

II. Your summary of the passage

III. Your critique of the passage
