In this interpretive essay, you will discuss your reading of “Facing It” by Yusef Komunyakaa. Komunyakaa is a Vietnam veteran, and his poetry often addresses issues about the war, and about its continuing influence in his own life, the life of his fellow veterans, and the life of the nation. In a short (2 pages or so) interpretive essay, describe the experience that Komunyakaa registers in this poem, and talk about how the poem communicates this experience. In order to do this, you will need to pay attention to the images in the poem, and to the author’s word choice with particular notice of words that seem unusual or out of place. This part of the essay assignment is due on the last day of our term 7/23. It will need to adhere to all the standards for written American academic English, but the ideas in it are the main determiners of your grade.
