Creating an Exhibition

For your research paper you will act as a curator and propose an exhibition to a museum of your choice composed of the works from our textbook that you will select.

You will need to discuss 5 photographs from our textbook and will need to include the photographer’s name and the work’s title, date, and printing process at the end. You can include other information as needed such as size, etc.
I will be grading you on how well you answer the questions below and the thoughtfulness of how you connect the five works to the theme.
Each answer should be about 300-500+ words. It is ok to go over this suggested word count. Yes, the last question won’t be that long since it is just a list of your artworks and that’s ok.
Please include citations for all sources used – this includes direct quotes or paraphrasing. Please use in-text citations (MLA) and include a list of your Works Cited at the end. Remember – I am looking more for your own words about each question than research done on the topics.
You will submit your paper here (also in Week 9’s module).

Question 1: What would the title of your exhibition be and why? What is the larger theme that unites the five works (and their artists) together and what does this theme mean to you and the works you picked as a whole? You’ll list your five works at the end so no need to replicate all the info here.
This is where you sketch out the big picture for the show and what you hope to accomplish by bringing these photographs together.
Big themes can be, for example, the body, war, the other, consumerism, the cityscape, gender, etc. Will you pick works from the same time period/movement, printing process, or photographer gender? All abstract or all representational?
Think through what bringing these works together may mean.

Question 2: What specifically are the issues being dealt with in the five individual photographs and how? Do they address these issues in the same way or differently? What is each photographer’s chosen printing process and subject matter and how do they relate to what they are trying to accomplish with their works? Is the biography of the artist important to understanding the work? If so, how? You’ll list your five works at the end so no need to replicate all the info here.
This will be where you discuss the five works in depth and explain their significance.
These answers will relate to the larger theme but are specific to the artwork itself.

Question 3: Which museum are you submitting this proposal to (make sure to pick a specific but it doesn’t need to be local) and why would be a good fit for your exhibition? What kind of audience do you hope to attract? Why is this a timely and relevant show for people today?
This is the time to really sell your exhibition to the museum – what’s at stake and why should people come to your show?

Question 4: Include a list of your five photographs with their figure number in the textbook and all their information. Please include the images as well or a link to the image online. You’re welcome to refer back to past PDFs of images in the Canvas modules to select images or pick others that we didn’t cover in the book. Yes, this section won’t be 300-500 words, that’s ok.

The textbook is called, Mary Warner Marien’s Photography: A Cultural History (4th edition preferably)
