Bearing Capacity of Soil

– Define bearing capacity of soil and the criteria of failure for a foundation (e.g. shear
failure and settlement)
– The needed soil parameters and site conditions which should be available to carry out
the bearing capacity calculation and the importance of each parameter/condition
– Illustrate the different calculations method(s) for determining the bearing capacity
– Field plate loading test and how bearing capacity can be expected from the test results
– Illustrate the different types of foundations and how engineer will select the suitable
type of foundation based on the bearing capacity
– Provide case study from literature about shallow foundation and bearing capacity (e.g.
the case study might be discussing ground improvement under shallow foundation to
increase the bearing capacity)
