Objective 1: Analyze and evaluate the effectiveness of interactive relationships with family and population clients, interdisciplinary groups, and community organizations.
The first objective for your alternative clinical experience is to evaluate your skills. When we look at skills, there are technical skills, which are your hands-on skills, and then there are non-technical skills. Non-Technical skills are interpersonal skills, which include communication skills, leadership skills, team-work skills, decision-making skills, and situation-awareness skills.
It is not possible to complete a task without having both sets of skills. As nurses, it is essential to know how to do this effectively to make a vital connection with your patient and to those that are important to them. Nurses are leaders, teachers, decision-makers, team players. Nurses must be able to think on the spot. A safe and effective nurse must do technically competent but also have sharp non-technical skills.
During your clinical experience, you will use your non-technical skills more than your technical skills since this is a virtual experience. However, you will still need both to some extent.
Teaching a client or patient how to give themselves an injection safely is as important as if you gave the injection yourself. However, when you can teach the task, you ultimately providing safer and more efficient care.
In this objective, you are analyzing and evaluating the effectiveness of interactive relationships. Your client, I know that everyone has not had the opportunity to work with a client; however, there are several takeaways that you will use throughout your career. Keep in mind healthcare is never provided in a bubble. It is always a team effort, and that the healthcare team encompasses other nurses, non-nursing, and groups of healthcare providers from different disciplines.
On the COVID-19 front, it is you, the patient, family members & other caregivers, the team at Hope Ripples, the team at Brenau, community leaders from the Executive Branch, the Legislative Branch on the Federal and State levels, and associated agencies such as the CDC, Health and Human Services and other professional organizations. On the local level, some guidelines require consideration from the local health department, hospitals, clinics, county government, city, and municipalities.
As nurses, we need to be knowledgable and consider all evidence-based practices, information, and practices from reputable services, organizations, and governing bodies to guide your practice. The nursing process is the standard in analyzing and evaluating, giving us a tool to formulate a plan and a nursing diagnosis. Here is a short review of the nursing process:
Assessment: Assessing systematically and dynamically to collect and analyze data about our client, including physiological data, also psychological, sociocultural, spiritual, economic, and lifestyle factors.
Diagnosing: Using your clinical judgment about the client’s response to actual or potential health conditions or needs.
Planning and outcomes management: Setting measurable and achievable short and long-term goals.
Implementation: Implemented according to plan, so continuity of care for the client is assured.
Evaluation: Both the client’s status and the effectiveness of the virtual care, in this case, you provide to be continuously be evaluated, and the plan modified as needed.
Take this opportunity to use the nursing process to analyze and evaluate and formulate a plan you will create for your coronavirus client. Once you create a plan for your client, take the time to reflect in your journal about your plan, your implementation, goals, response, evaluation, and comments from your client and/or caregivers. Also, take time to reflect on the effectiveness of the relationships you develop and their importance and how they are working or not, and considerations or concerns from policy creating organizations and evidence-based practices that you will be considering.
Take time to reflect on this assignment in your reflective journal on your skills that you think you will need and the sources that will help create an effective plan for your client.

Objective 2 – Apply critical thinking and decision making to community contexts in relation to assessment, resource utilization, program development, policy formation, and interventions with persons, families and populations to promote the health of the public
Our second objective is about applying your abilities in critical thinking and decision making with the current policies, local and other resources, program development, and other interventions with the corona virus-positive population in the United States. This sector of the population isn’t ill enough to in an acute care or long-term care facility.
Critical thinking in nursing is a purposeful, logical process that results in powerful patient outcomes. The critical thinking nurse has an open mind and draws upon evidence-based research and past clinical experiences both from personal experiences and from other documented respectful resources to solve client problems.
No decision can be made without content. A detailed assessment, knowing your resources, program, policy, and regulations are imperative to creating interventions to promote health and the public’s health.
Take time to reflect in your reflective journal on how you will empower yourself to care for the corona-virus client who is home-bound. Look at all your available options.
