Instructions:

1. Use two materials for this writing assignment:

(a) Julie Otsuka’s novel, When the Emperor was Divine

(b) Chapter 6 of Carol Dweck’s book, Mindset: The New Psychology of Success

2. Write an essay in which you do the following tasks:

a. Describe the growth and the fixed mindsets of couples according to Dweck.

b. Next, focus on two of the major characters in Otsuka’s novel: the father and the mother. Which aspects of their marriage exemplify a growth mindset? Which parts exhibit a fixed mindset? Support your arguments with specifics from the story.

c. Then, analyze the children’s sibling relationship. Which one of the children behaves with a growth mindset, and which one acts with fixed mindset? Support your arguments with specifics from the story.

d. For the conclusion, conclude what the couple (i.e. the father and the mother) needs to do in order to heal and to save their relationship. Who needs to change? Explain why.

3. Format your essay using the specific instructions available in Canvas; that document has this title, The Modern Language Association (MLA) Format: Preparing Coursework for Submission. (NOTE: The Works Cited page is NOT included in the total word count or the total number of pages since it is its own, separate page at the of an essay.)
