2. Moral Criticism should decide whether or not a work is good for society based on the values it teaches. If the novel teaches good values, then it is good for society. Often, students choose to narrow this down by picking a particular philosophy or religion (e.g. Christianity, Islam, Stoicism, etc.). They then analyze whether or not the novel’s values align with that particular philosophy or religion’s values to decide if the book is good or bad for society.

Since the novel doesn’t really focus on this, it ends up viewing multiple theories. Primarily, it most closely connects to Gender Studies and Queer Theory since it discusses gender roles and the novel’s treatment of lesbian characters. However, it also mentions feminism and the Laura’s psychology being raised by a single parent.

The final sentence of the essay reads the most like the thesis, and it reads like a thesis for Gender Studies and Queer Theory, matching must of the content in the body paragraphs. Instead of using Moral Criticism here and reworking a large majority of the essay, it might be easier to instead focus the essay on the former.
