Choose one (1) of the prompts below, and follow the learning targets in the rubric below too. Particularly focus on the persuasive target, as this letter is centred around persuasion.
Complete a pre-writing strategy to show how you planned your letter, i.e. a mind map, a spider graph, a list, or questions that you asked yourself.
Include the correct use of a greeting and farewell, e.g. Dear…. To…. Hello…. Sincerely…. Faithfully…. Yours truly….
Write a letter from the point of view (POV), of any character from R+J to another character with the purpose of persuading them to do something. Make sure you consider the Socrates persuasion skills, for example appealing to emotion (pathos), and using logic (logos).
Ensure that your letter is centred around a universal theme from R+J. For example, if you are writing from the POV of Juliet to Lady Capulet, you might be emphasising the love between parents and children, so your letter’s main point might be about ‘parental love’.
1. In Act 3, Scene 1 Tybalt is killed by Romeo as the two battle in the streets of Verona. In a letter to Juliet, assume the role of Romeo, who has the unhappy challenge of having to explain to his new wife how it came to pass that he killed her cousin just hours after marrying her. In addition to explaining what happened, as Romeo, your job in writing this letter is to make sure you are persuading Juliet of something. Think hard before you write: what would Romeo try to persuade Juliet of at this point in the play, and how would he make his argument convincing to her? What appeals to logic and her emotions would he use?
Artist’s Statement: (Length: 3-4 paragraphs, with two (2) outside sources and three (3) pieces of textual evidence from R+J)
Write an artist’s statement that identifies the universal theme that you centred your persuasive letter around. Also, connect this theme to today’s society using outside sources that are correctly in-text cited with a full reference list too.
Complete a pre-writing strategy to show how you planned your letter, i.e. a mind map, a spider graph, a list, or questions that you asked yourself.
Follow the steps below to help you:
Include a brief introduction that clearly introduces your intentions for the artist’s statement, such as, what play is it, who’s it by, what theme you are identifying, and how it is linked to today’s society.
Include a main body that contains the main detailed information of your artist’s statement, which should include your outside sources and textual evidence from R+J.
Include a brief conclusion that sums up your artist’s statement and clearly connects back to your introduction.
Do online research and find at least 2 outside sources (e.g. online news articles) that are connected to today’s society, and the universal theme. In-text cite these correctly, and correctly formatted into a reference list too.
Use 3 pieces of textual evidence from R+J that is correctly in-text cited in order to provide evidence for how the theme connects between R+J, and today’s society. Also correctly input the edition of R+J that we read into your reference list too.
