The purpose of this discussion is to get comfortable discussing essays and articles; using quotations and specific references to support your observations; and engaging in academic conversation.

Your main post should begin by typing in (or use copy & paste) the question. This will help your readers and also helps you think about the question in detail while you’re writing. Show that you’ve read the essay carefully and have something thoughtful to say about it.

In your paragraph, use a quotation from the essay — be sure to integrate this quotation into your own sentence with an introductory phrase as shown in the model below. The title of the essay and the quoted language both belong in quotation marks, shown in orange below. Also include the page number in parentheses before your final period, as shown in green. (For online essays, there is no page number to cite!)

(C) Waring’s essay begins and ends by discussing a new film called Sorry to Bother You. Discuss the impact and purpose of this opening and closing strategy for organizing / structuring the essay. Ideas: Does the reference to a fictionalized story add meaningful support to an essay that is based on research and interviews? Why or why not? Since the film is about a person she describes as a “monoracial” black American, and her research is focused on black-white “biracial” Americans, you might also think about how it all fits together and whether you think the film is a useful part of making her argument.
