The purpose of this assignment is to allow students to revise and resubmit one graded essay. The
assignment is not mandatory. If you feel that revising and resubmitting an essay will be beneficial to your
grade, feel free to take this opportunity.
Assignment:
You will choose one of the first two essays and make substantial revisions. You may not use this
assignment to “make up” an essay. If you did not submit an essay or received a 0 for an essay grade for
any other reason, the 0 is irreversible.
If you chose to take part in this assignment you can revise your essay up to the next level grade. For
example, if you earned a C, you can revise the essay until you reach a B.
Here’s the process:Once you get an overview of the grade, take a look at the rubric. This will provide you the actual point
layout of the essay. You should identify the areas where you lost the most points. Those will probably be
the elements of the essay you want to revise.
The notes on the page may or may not help for revision. I often make some basic and redundant
comments on the page, but I do highlight some of the most significant issues and give a few notes on how
to fix them.
2) For Actual Revision: DO NOT REWRITE THE ENTIRE ESSAY!!!
Check out how close you are to the next grade level. Remember, you can only raise your grade one level.
Knowing the percentage is very important here.
For example: If you received a 21/30 that ends up as a 70%, C. This means you need 3 more points to get
to an 80%, B.
Choose two or three different areas on the rubric where you lost the most points and revise those areas
(and those areas only).
For example: The thesis statement is worth 5 points total and you received 3 points for your thesis. And/or
the topic sentences are worth 5 points and you received 3.5 points for your topic sentences.
Go through your original draft and fix those areas as best you can. If you are not sure what to do, send me
an e-mail or meet with me and I will give you some help.
Once you rewrite/revise, please highlight or change the color or bold the font of the revisions. This is
important because I want to see exactly what you have changed and how you changed it. Make it very
easy for me to spot. If you do not, I WILL NOT give you credit for the revision.
3) Post it: Other Conditions…
Once you have made the changes, highlighted them, and saved them to a new document, upload the
document to the this link. Currently this link is not worth any points; however, if you receive points from your
revision, I will add points to this category that reflect what I felt the revision were worth.
You are not finished, however. Before you submit the document, please list and describe your changes in
the comment box. I want to know exactly what you changed and why you changed it. If you do not fully
explain your changes and simply just tell me what you changed, I will not read your revision. You need to
show me that you put some effort and thought into the revision.
1) Review your Grade:
The first thing you should do (after looking at your grade) is to look at my summary comments for the
essay. This basically breaks down the major issues as I saw them.
