Article Analysis

At the end of this assignment, you should have a cohesive, tangible product (e.g., traditional paper, website, podcast with supplementary materials, interactive timeline or map, etc.). In addition, you will be asked to share key components of your project (topic/question, method of inquiry, key findings, links to course readings, implications). Each student will have 10 minutes to present and 10 minutes for Q & A.

You can choose any one of the following 3 options:

Option 1: As a way to understand how learning theories shape the content area instruction, you will investigate several curricula on a single topic. For example, the way that the circumference of a circle is taught varies across different curricular materials, and these materials are shaped by a view of how students learn mathematics. For this culminating project, you will choose a topic to explore across a range of curricular materials to see how learning theories figure into curricular instantiations of your content area instruction. Along the way, this project will include small exercises in analyzing lessons from the perspective of learning theory; for this project you will have a significant study of various curricula that treat a single content area topic. Early in the semester, you will share your design and plan for this project and get feedback and support from colleagues.

Option 2: Option 2 is similar to option 1, but instead of looking at a single topic across several curricula, you will take a whole curriculum (e.g., Arithmetic in second grade) and look for evidence of the theories we have discussed
