Analyzing The Rhetorical Strategies of an Image

Your task is to write an essay in a limited time that analyzes the rhetorical strategies of an image. While you are required to include a copy of the image with your essay, you must also describe the image in such a way that your readers can visualize the image. This includes color, size, specific characteristics, what senses are stimulated (and how?), etc.

Identification of the image (title), publication credits, credit to the author and author background must also be included in the narrative. (This is important!)

Remember you are to discuss all aspects of the image and what you believe was the author’s intent in the content (i.e., particular objects or persons, colors, size, caricature and exaggeration of objects, etc.) and what you gained from studying the graphic(s).

Study both the foreground and background.
Reflect on what you believe are the overt/obvious and covert/hidden messages being transmitted.
Identify the figurative language suggested by the images and reflect on the cartoonists’ choices.
Discuss the intended message using the criterion of (the elements) of an argument.
Discuss the success of the transmitted message(s).
Topic:

Choose an editorial or a political cartoon to analyze regarding one of these four topics:

Peaceful protests
Organized anarchism
Police Brutality
Police Reform
You may choose any of the above topics for your research of a political cartoon, but do not use an advertisement or anything that is commercial in nature (i.e., trying to sell a product). You must turn in an actual copy of the political cartoon or image (and not an electronic link to it) when your paper is submitted.
I need a copy of the image separate from the paper.
