DISCUSSION TOPICS
McFadden ends her essay Teaching the Camera to See My Skin with the statement, “I’ve developed skills to subvert the blinkered design of tools that were never imagined for my hands, my face.”
1. Consider a specific technology that is designed for a certain set of users but is still used outside of that set. Explain how people outside of the targeted set of users adapt to the technology.
2. In one of your responses to a classmates, address the technology he or she has discussed, and then brainstorm some adaptations the designers of those technologies could implement in future versions of their product.
3. In your second response to a classmate–this time to a classmate’s response to another classmate– build on the brainstorming process by adding your own ideas and solutions to what your classmate has proposed.
